City Archaeology: An Interactive Exhibition in a Historic Vault

How is a city read from what lies under it? For a city history museum we designed and built an exhibition that explains archaeology through everyday finds and lets visitors work like archaeologists.

Project scope

421 m²

exhibition area

4

zones

2

opened

Location and client under NDA.

The challenge

Explain what archaeology is, and show how small finds tell the story of everyday life in an 18th-century city.

What we did

Exhibition architecture, installations, audio and video content, and the build. Visitors step into an archaeologist’s study, look into a glass-covered trench, dig in a sand table and follow a glowing map of the old riverbeds. Themed rooms on clay pipes, mineral water bottles, a crockery shop and old shoes, and a final zone where scientists answer visitors’ questions.

For whom: History and city museums, archaeology exhibitions.

Four zones, from the trench to the finds

The archaeologist’s study

The first zone puts the visitor in the room of the scientist whose chance discovery started city archaeology.

The trench

A real excavation shown under glass: layers of soil and the finds inside them.

Dig yourself

A sand table where visitors uncover objects the way archaeologists do.

The glowing map

A light map of the old riverbeds shows how the city grew around water.

Witnesses of the era

Themed rooms on clay pipes, mineral water bottles, a crockery shop and old shoes: everyday life told by small finds.

Dialogue with scientists

The final zone, where researchers answer the questions visitors ask most.
