Art Museum: A Collection You Can Explore, With a Touch-Screen Map Table

A young regional art museum wanted to inspire visitors and support local artists. We created a new concept and exhibition design built around one idea: the story of the exhibit itself.

The challenge

Make a young art museum a place that inspires visitors and supports local artists.

What we did

A new concept and exhibition design: eight themed locations across five zones, from the museum courtyard to the store rooms. Folk toys stand on a relief map with a touch-screen table, and part of the collection is shown in open storage so visitors see how a museum keeps its treasures.

For whom: Art and regional museums.

From the courtyard to the store rooms

Society

How the fine arts appeared: painting, graphics, sculpture and crafts in world and regional culture.

Home

The history of the museum and the people who founded it.

The workshop

Techniques and outstanding local masters.

The store rooms

Open storage: visitors see how a museum records and keeps its treasures.

The relief map

Folk toys stand on a relief map of the region, with a touch-screen table to explore them.

Discourse

A space for discussion about art and the life of the collection.
